The city Hangzhou is located in Eastern China in the southern wing of the Yangtze River Delta and is surrounded with numerous rivers, lakes and ponds. This unique and magnificent natural scenery sets Hangzhou apart from other major Chinese cities.

Since the heron’s favourite habitat is the shallow waters of the lake and river, it is chosen to symbolize the city of Hangzhou and to reflect the quality of its living environment. The heron has a timeless beauty that perfectly represents Hangzhou’s past legacy and future prosperity, because it is a symbol for longevity and good fortune. Therefor the heron was proposed as the new city logo in Hangzhou’s design competition in 2007.

The symbol is based on the circular shape of the lotus leaf, a water plant that grows in the West-Lake of Hangzhou, but also a Chinese symbol of good fortune. The logo design is constructed from a single line, similar to the endless knot. This symbol with interlaced strings indicates close connection and refers to cooperation. Combined with the colour red, it is traditionally a symbol for good fortune and prosperity. An important aspect since the focus in Chinese cities nowadays is mainly targeted to economic growth.
